At the onset I would like to say that the only thing I celebrate about the movie is our own Rehman's music and the performance of the kids, they were adorable.
Other than that I think the movie is only a mockery of India and the worst part is we are celebrating it. The entire movie is a collection of all the bad aspects of our country, which I am sure exists in other parts of the World too but you don't have movies made of them with such exclusivity and hype.
The movie basically calls India a slum dog, where you can get rich either by becoming a serial killer or by accident. The entire time there is nothing good shown about us. I KNOW, and WE ALL KNOW India is not ONLY about kids living in slums growing up to be prostitutes and killers or chai wallahs or a large group of cheap labor in call centers. Nothing good is shown in the entire movie even in glimpses. Whats more, to give totality to the mockery the 'quiz master' only mocks the protagonist's profession, the call center professionals and also his possibility of knowing the answers and finally shows that the man got his last question right only out of sheer luck.
This movie, my friends, is not just about Jamal, its a only a sham. The real intention of the maker of this movie is to jeer at us, calling our country a slum dog that is becoming a millionaire only by accident and we are allowing it.
I am extremely angered by this kind humiliating portrayal of India.

Well- I agree with you in essence Shruti-though its good that Rahman and Gulzar are being recognized(they are world class composers and it was long overdue)the director has stuck to only over hyping the bad and teh ugly in India. Actually 'Aamir' too had this aspect but it had a kind of honest feeling about it-here the director has portrayed India as ONLY a poor country-and look at the cleverness of the foreign award ceremonies-theypick a movie which showcases the uglier aspect of a rising economy-they are able to put India on centrestage yes but with a warning of not going to India personally! Ha! What shaming....am anagry too
Exactly Mithe..the movie lacks honesty. Its sole intention is to trash us.
:-) isn't this how the country is in first place? Yea there are poor people every where but the appalling conditions in which they survive and eek a living happens here. But they why should we be so angry? I have not seen the movie but go to North Bombay and this is all you have amidst the rich, there are good number of Bentley on the road and on the other side people are still struggling to get a square meal. This is reality so why do we have to get so worried or worked up about?
brazil wasn't angered with city of god, italy wasnt angered with bicycle thief, US wasnt angered with do the right thing, UK didnt shed a tear about trainspotting... We indians have no humour only hypocrisy
People see what they want to see. The movie maker just chose that aspect of India. Shows like Jerry springer gets aired in other countries and they tend to think all Americans/westerners are like the ones they see there. Similarly movies like slum dog, salaam bombay get shown in western countries. It's just the media that's trying to mess our minds :)
